Charcoal and black pastel observational drawings

These are observational drawings which I did of a necklace charm. I chose it because the components are layered and vary in shape and texture. I was also interested in drawing a feather again as I felt the outcome of my previous drawing had been successful and so I wanted to experiment with different mediums. I enjoyed working with the charcoal as it could achieve very dark atone compared to pencil and yet it still blended very faintly too. I used a rubber to add highlights which was effective, however the charcoal has smudged again in the picture so that is a downside of using it. The black pastel showed the textured grain of the paper which worked well with the natural nature of the feather. However it was difficult to achieve lighter tone and it did not blend as well as the charcoal. I will continue to experiment with charcoal as I like the outcome of this work.
